Description
The object that inspired Gae Aulenti in the design of the Table with Wheels (Tavolo con Ruote) was an industrial cart used in the Fontana Arte headquarters to transport glass, an example of an intuitive design born from the association with everyday tools. The table then takes shape, consisting of a sheet of ground glass that rises a few centimeters from the ground, resting on four wheels with tires. Thanks to the replacement of the wooden top with glass, result of the extravagant mind of Gae Aulenti, the cart transforms from an anonymous industrial tool to a prestigious piece of furniture with a singular design, thanks to the presence of wheels instead of legs.
Given the immediate positive response from the public and critics, the Table with Wheels immediately found its place in the most important design temples, such as the MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where it is still part of the permanent collection. This is how the substitution of a simple element transforms the nature of the object and its destination.
