Description
Zhejiang, circa 1860
This round wooden container is from Zhejiang province in south east China. Made from beech, it would have been used originally to hold rice or other foods. A brass hoop supports the container at the top and bottom and the circular top is decorated with a simple scrolling pattern in carved relief. The little handle on top of the lid is carved in the form of a Foo Dog. Also known as a temple lion, these mythical beasts were mythical guardians in Chinese culture, thought to ward off evil spirits.
