Description
Jiangsu, circa 1880
Cabinets from the area around northern Jiangsu and Shandong provinces on China’s east coast were fairly simple and solid in style – built for practicality rather than being finely decorated like much of the furniture produced further south. This storage cabinet is a good example, with thick, chunky frames in beech wood. The doors are set centrally with fixed panels either side and are fitted with heavy metal hardware. The wood has a lovely golden tone and grain and, with a contrasting dark lacquer finish on the inside and two drawers, the cabinet would sit easily in any setting for useful storage.
