Description
Qinghai, circa 1920
This long, narrow table originates from the early twentieth century, when it was produced in the western Chinese province of Qinghai. Originally designed as an altar table, it would have been placed against a wall in the main reception room of a Chinese home with photos or portraits of deceased family members shown above. The table top would have acted as a surface for burning incense or for displaying other offerings. This practice of ancestor worship was believed to bring blessings to the living family members in return. The table’s everted ends are an indication of its religious purpose.
The once deep black lacquer finish has worn to a lighter shade, with a wonderful patina on the sides and top surface of the table formed over the decades of use. The table has a thick, waisted top, with a cuved apron and thick legs that end in the classic Chinese horse hoof feet. The lower legs and feet in particular have worn to the paler, natural colour of the poplar wood underneath the old black finish. This is an unusual piece in highly original condition that would make a fantastic statement piece today as a large console.
