Description
Shanxi, circa 1880
This lovely old table would sit perfectly in front of a sofa as a long, low coffee table, or could be used as a TV stand. It comes from Shanxi province in central China, made in a frame and panel style and in an original condition, still with the old finish and drawer handles. It would have been used originally as a low storage coffer for valuables, with the drawers once able to be locked. They could also be removed to allow access to the space below them behind the fixed lower panels, providing an extra hidden compartment.
The table is made from walnut wood – a less common material than elm but one that was readily available in parts of Shanxi. The wood is highly prized for furniture making, considered superior to elm and with a lovely rich, golden tone.
Here the table was finished in a dark lacquer over the wood, still largely present but worn in places, particularly on the top surface, to give a lovely, aged patina. The four drawers and panels below are set within rounded frames – a featured often seen on Shanxi furniture. A beautiful, authentic piece that would add character and charm to any interior.
