Description

Shanxi, circa 1870

This large table was produced in Shanxi province, central China, where it would have been used originally as a ‘painting table’ – a work surface for scholarly pursuits such as calligraphy or watercolours. Today its large proportions make it ideally suited as a dining table, with a beautiful patina and character formed over the decades. The table is made from elm wood – a popular material for furniture making in northern China due to its durability and attractive grain. The original dark finish has largely worn to reveal a paler colour below, with the beautiful, wide wood grain prominent.

The table is in a style that was popular during China’s Ming dynasty, with a waisted top and the legs supported by curved, ‘S’ shaped braces at each corner, referred to as giant’s arm braces or ‘bawangcheng’ in Chinese. The legs taper down slightly to the classic horse hoof feet that are a feature of so many antique Chinese tables. The table is large enough to comfortably seat eight. Combine with antique Yoke-Back chairs or benches to complete a unique look.
